Day-by-Day Itinerary
1
Rainforest Canopy to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp)
After an early breakfast, take a scenic 3-hour drive to Londorossi Gate on the fertile western slope of Mount Kilimanjaro for national park registration. From there, drive to the Lemosho trailhead to meet your full female crew. Step into the lush, emerald canopy of the montane rainforest. Trek along winding soil paths shaded by giant moss-covered trees, ferns, and wild impatiens flowers. Keep your eyes peeled for black-and-white Colobus monkeys leaping through the canopy and endemic bird species. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa ("Big Tree") Camp in the late afternoon to find your tents set up, private chemical toilets ready, and warm wash water waiting at your tent door.
2
Escalating the Heath Zone to Shira 1 Camp
Awaken to the sound of songbirds and hot coffee or tea delivered straight to your tent. Today’s trek climbs steadily out of the rainforest and into the sub-alpine heath and moorland zone. The tall trees give way to giant heather bushes, volcanic rock formations, and vast open ridges. You will cross several mountain streams and climb across the rim of the massive Shira Plateau—one of the highest plateaus on Earth and a remnant of Kilimanjaro’s ancient volcanic collapse. Reach Shira 1 Camp by late afternoon, where sweeping views of Kibo Peak await across the tundra plain. Enjoy our first evening "Sisterhood Circle" in the warm mess tent before dinner.
3
Crossing the Vast Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp
Designed as a gentle, high-yield acclimatization day, today features a relaxed traverse directly across the heart of the Shira Plateau. Hiking at a steady, deliberate "Pole Pole" (slowly, slowly) pace, you will trek across a surreal, high-desert landscape surrounded by ancient lava flows and peculiar giant Lobelia plants. The gentle gradient allows your body to adjust seamlessly to the reduced oxygen levels. Arrive early at Shira 2 Camp in time for a warm, high-protein hot lunch. The afternoon is reserved for rest, reading, personal reflection, and taking advantage of the campsite's breathtaking sunset vistas looking back toward Mount Meru rising above the clouds.
4
High-Altitude Acclimatization — Lava Tower to Barranco Valley.
This is one of the most vital safety days of the expedition, practicing the golden rule of high-altitude mountaineering: "Climb high, sleep low." Leaving Shira 2, turn east up a rocky, barren landscape toward the towering volcanic monolith of Lava Tower (4,630 m). Stop at Lava Tower for a hot lunch while letting your body adjust to the thin air. Afterward, begin a dramatic 2-hour descent into the sheltered Barranco Valley. Dropping nearly 700 m back down forces your body to produce additional red blood cells, dramatically increasing your summit success odds. Finish the day surrounded by the strange, prehistoric Giant Senecio trees that carpet Barranco Camp beneath the great Barranco Wall.
5
Conquest of the Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp
Start the morning with an exciting highlight: scrambling up the famous 257-meter Barranco Wall ("The Kissing Rock"). While it looks intimidating from camp, the Wall is a fun, non-technical hand-over-foot scramble guided step-by-step by your female leads. Reaching the top reveals an exhilarating vantage point overlooking the sea of clouds below. From the crest of the wall, traverse a series of gentle alpine valleys before making a short descent and final climb into Karanga Camp ("Peanut Camp"). Arrive in time for lunch, afternoon pulse oximeter check-ins, and a restful evening preparing mentally and physically for the high-altitude push.
6
Ridge Climb to Barafu High Camp & Summit Preparation.
After breakfast, leave Karanga Camp and follow the trail as it intersects with the Mweka Route, climbing along a stark, wind-swept rocky ridge leading up to Barafu High Camp ("Ice" in Swahili). Arrive at high camp by early afternoon. The landscape here is entirely arctic and moonlike, with Kibo’s icy summit slopes towering directly above. Settle into your tent, unpack your midnight summit clothing, and attend a mandatory pre-summit briefing covering thermal layering, hydration, and emergency oxygen protocols. Eat a carb-heavy dinner early at 5:00 PM and retreat to your sleeping bag by 7:00 PM for rest before the midnight alarm.
7
IWD SUMMIT DAY! Uhuru Peak Sunrise Celebration.
Wake up at 11:00 PM to hot tea, light snacks, and high energy! At midnight, step into the crisp mountain air under a canopy of stars to begin the final ascent on International Women's Day. Trek in a silent, synchronized line up the scree slopes toward Stella Point (5,756 m) on the crater rim. As dawn breaks over the horizon, continue along the glaciated crater rim for the final 45-minute push to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft) right at sunrise!
Celebrate standing atop the Roof of Africa on March 8 with your all-female team, pose for high-resolution photo sessions with the custom International Women’s Day 2027 Summit Banner, and soak in the 360-degree views above the clouds. After soaking in the victory, descend back to Barafu Camp for a 2-hour rest and hot lunch, then continue down through the alpine desert to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for a well-deserved night of deep sleep.
